With our sun finally warming up and the days getting longer, we are seeing our furry clients coats are starting to shed. These undercoats are great at keeping them warm during the cold weather but a dogs body inherently knows when it's time to get rid of them.
We read an article the other day that stated that their cousins in the wild did not need help shedding their winter coats so neither should dogs. They neglected to mention that dogs have been domesticated for quite a while now and are actually dependent on humans to intervene.
Huskies and Akitas, for instance, wouldn't even be found in Southern California where we typically have two weather choices, hot and hotter (this past winter being excluded because let's be honest, when was the last time it has been this cold here).
Another thing to keep in mind is that the San Fernando Valley had a flea problem and without proper grooming, you're looking at a possible infestation. And, yes, with the under coats blowing out, the fleas are awake and looking to move into their new spring and summer homes. Please make sure you are treating your yards and your pups. Unfortunately a lot of topical treatments are no longer working because the fleas are adapting. Talk to your vet about what their recommendation is if you are having a hard time keeping the fleas at bay. Diatomaceous earth is a wonderful product however that you can put all over your yard. No hard to pets or humans, 100% harm to an little buggy that comes in contact with it (obviously use sparingly because we like and need those other little buggies).
If you haven't already, please make sure you book your deshed packages now so your pets can have a great start to the new season. They will thank you for it, your clothes will thank you for it, your house will thank you for it... your in laws that come over and leave without needing to borrow your lint roller will thank you for it! Also, it will cost less money because wait until later in the season leads to the dogs overheating more and actually shedding more. So your wallet will thank you as well.
So, in summary, those coats are blowing and fleas are looking for their new summer homes. Welcome Spring in the San Fernando Valley 😎
